TENNIS COURTS

The Problem
Algae & moss constantly out-compete the competition given the slightest encouragement and artificial tennis courts are one of their favourite surfaces, especially tarmac. Groundsmen report more problems with this surface than any other and the problem is exasperated if, as in many cases, the courts are situated near trees, hedges or grass banks as this can increase the amount of shade whilst also creating drainage problems.

Over time the pore spaces on the playing surface become clogged with debris and the moss spores (that are always present) are quick to generate. They are also hard to kill or remove. Pressure washing
is a commonly used maintenance operation but the depth of spore contamination, combined with the large surface areas involved, can lead to less than perfect results and can even damage the top surface and enlarge the pore spaces.

Steam cleaning is definitely not advised.
Brushing the courts frequently is the most common practise but can lead to long term problems. The brushing can break up existing moss and debris (soil, leaves etc.) allowing infiltration of the finer grade porous surface tarmac. Over time this will severely lower drainage efficiency leading to increased recurrence and severity of secondary problems with moss and algae.

Of course, in the case of any sports surface, the problems created by algae and moss are not purely aesthetic, they make the playing surface
slippery and potentially dangerous for any unsuspecting player

"The proactive benefit of RBT across all sports is huge and I feel we have finally solved our algae nightmare."

The Solution
RBT works best in this environment if used regularly and as part of a long term solution. Prevention is better than a cure so maintenance must cover issues such as looking at drainage, light & shade, annual cleaning and regular removal of debris – if possible using a blower – and also applying RBT to nearby fences and furniture.

Application of Residual Barrier Technology will then give a broad spectrum elimination of bacteria, fungi and spores whilst creating a hostile micro surface that combats re-establishment and significantly reduces risk of future contamination, remaining active once dry to deliver substantial, long lasting performance.

The Result
As part of an ongoing safety and maintenance regime, RBT is the perfect match.

James Mead, the Head Groundsman at Rugby School has said “The proactive benefit of RBT 24/7 across all sports is huge and I feel we have finally solved our algae nightmare”.

This means that regular use of RBT as part of your maintenance program will severely restrict opportunities for moss and algae to take hold. Less grip for moss, more grip for players. And Game, Set & Match to RBT
